Adapted Physical Education Teacher
Offers specialized instruction tailored to the unique motor, physical, and adaptive needs of students with disabilities who need modifications to the general physical education program.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborates with the IEP team: Works with general PE teachers, related service providers, and special education staff to ensure each student has equal access to physical education classes that meet the IEP goals and individual student needs. Collaborate with general education PE teachers to support inclusion and differentiated instruction. Communicate regularly with parents on student progress and ideas for generalization.
Specialized Instruction: Train and support paraeducators and general education PE staff on adapted strategies, equipment, and safety considerations. Design and deliver adapted physical education lessons and activities that support physical fitness, motor development, and social interaction. Provide direct instruction to students in individual, small-group, or whole-group settings.
Planning: Modify and adapt PE curriculum, equipment, and physical education classrooms to ensure accessibility and inclusion for students with disabilities.
Assessment and Evaluation: Assess students to determine eligibility for Adapted Physical Education services using both formal and informal evaluation tools.
Individualized Education Plan (IEP): Develop and implement individualized APE goals based on the student's identified special education needs. Monitor and document student progress on IEP goals using identified data sources. Complete required reports, evaluations, and other documentation within the identified timelines outlined in the IDEA.
Professional Development: Participate in professional development activities on best practices for adapted physical education. Maintain current licensure in APE endorsement as required by KSDE
