Role Description

Lux Research is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Intern to join our Utilities team, with a specific focus on power transmission and distribution innovation. The intern will help track and evaluate cutting-edge developments in the electrical grid space, focusing on areas that promise to improve upon existing technologies.

This is a unique opportunity for students or early-career professionals passionate about energy systems, sustainability, and innovation research.


Please note that this role is a hybrid position out of Boston, MA.


Responsibilities:

· Innovation Landscape Analysis: Investigate trends and breakthroughs in power transmission and distribution technologies.

· Patent Research: Analyze patent filings to assess the direction and intensity of innovation activity in the grid sector.

· Academic Publication Review: Scan recent publications to identify promising research and emerging technical approaches.

· Startup and Investment Tracking: Monitor startup ecosystems and funding activity to detect where capital is flowing and why.

· Technology Assessment: Compare new solutions with today’s baseline technologies, identifying opportunities for improvement and disruption.

· Reporting and Insights Development: Summarize findings and insights into digestible formats for use by internal stakeholders and clients.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

· Pursuing a degree in Engineering (Electrical, Energy Systems, etc.), Data Science, Environmental Science, Public Policy, or related fields.

· Ability to work in-person out of the Boston, MA office 2-3 days a week.

· Strong interest in the electric power grid, utilities, and emerging technologies.

· Analytical and research experience (e.g., with patents, academic databases, or startup ecosystems).

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, and literature databases (e.g., Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, Crunchbase, etc.).

· Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
