Responsibilities:
Scope:
The Senior Research Systems Engineer (SRSDE) works within the Research Department, whose efforts are ultimately designed to assist all other Sable Systems International (SSI) Departments as well as current and future customers. The SRSDE evaluates and recommends new concepts being introduced into the technology foundation utilized in SSI products and services.
The SRSDE will assist in implementing beneficial technologies as they are developed into products and services offered within all SSI product lines. The SRSDE will evaluate and improve the current SSI technology foundation as well as promote and clarify its use to the Research department, the SSI team as a whole, and SSI customers.
Management Scope: No direct reports
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and maintain an expert knowledge base of currently used technologies (e.g., sensors, electronics, computer/embedded systems, etc.) in SSI products and services to provide solutions to non-conformances and input into the Existing Product Review process, as well as new prototypes and products.
- Contribute to the establishment of performance specifications (e.g., during specifications meetings).
- Develop and document experiments that can be used to measure product performance.
- Refine and streamline experiments to be incorporated as inspection methods
- Stay apprised of emerging technologies and provide suggestions for how these technologies can be used to improve SSI products and processes.
- Design and execute experiments to evaluate new technologies suggested for introduction into the SSI technology foundation.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting insights and knowledge of instrument maintenance specifications to promote proper maintenance of all SSI instrumentation.
- Represent the Research Department by providing support, data analysis, and technical expertise to all other SSI Departments as needed.
- Promote further education and training of SSI team members and customers by creating and presenting content through various forums and formats.
- Maintain and implement metrics for documenting and measuring the growth and stability of the SSI technology foundation.
- Assist with the Software Team SSI code base when necessary to promote clean, reliable, reusable, and thoroughly tested code.
- Maintain a cursory knowledge of calibration and inspection methods used by SSI to provide consultation to multidisciplinary teams throughout the organization and to the SSI customer base, also back up other Departments in emergency cases.
- Maintain a cursory knowledge of data analysis methods currently in use and assist the Research Team and Data Scientists with expanding and refining the methods to promote transparency in analysis, long-term traceability of instrumentation, and provide rich, useful data to the SSI customer base.
- Other duties as needed to promote growth within SSI and to the scientific community.
Qualifications:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the practical application of the SSI technology foundation as it relates to the ongoing design and manufacture of SSI instruments, systems, and components.

- Programming in multiple languages (e.g., C, C++, C#, VB6/NET, Python, JavaScript, HTML, others as needed)
- Computer operating systems and embedded systems (e.g., Windows, Linux, Microchip PIC, Atmel, Espressif ESP line, ARM-based SoC)
- Knowledge of software version control systems, specifically Subversion and git.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings as generated by CAD tools such as SolidWorks.
- Ability to read and understand circuit schematics and board layouts as generated by tools such as Eagle.
- Ability to simulate circuits, build prototype circuits using discrete components and breadboards, and use various instruments for measuring electrical power (e.g., DMM, Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer).
- Background in both deterministic and probabilistic concepts and methods in mathematics.
- Background in signals and system analysis for both continuous and discrete time and frequency domains.
- Knowledge of the various tools and processes used in the manufacture of the electronic components that are incorporated into the design of various SSI instruments/systems/components.
- Maintaining above-average basic personal computer skills, including but not limited to MS Word and MS Excel.
- Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills while able to effectively interact across multiple levels within the organization.
- The ability to both work independently (with minimal supervision) and as part of a large cross-functional team
- Proficiency at writing technical test specifications and generating process or procedural documentation for SSI product development/creation in concert with ISO9001 standards.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks as needed, should be able to start and stop tasks with minimal downtime.
- Passion for continuing education and a desire to expand understanding of self and others.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- BS degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or computer science, or a minimum of three to five years of related electrical, software, and mechanical design experience within companies that design, manufacture, and market electronic and electromechanical laboratory instrumentation in a test engineering role.
- Minimum of two to five years of hands-on instrumentation systems level design experience (analog and digital).
