Position Summary

Thompson Engineering is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with 10+ years of experience and an active Professional Engineer (PE) license to lead and grow our geotechnical engineering services. This role is ideal for a highly experienced engineer who combines strong technical expertise with project management, client leadership, and mentoring capabilities.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering complex geotechnical investigations, analyses, and designs while supporting business development and guiding junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage geotechnical engineering projects from proposal through completion
  • Plan and oversee subsurface investigations, including field exploration and laboratory testing programs
  • Perform and review geotechnical analyses and design for:
    • Foundations (shallow and deep)
    • Earth retaining structures
    • Slopes and embankments
    • Pavements and earthwork
  • Prepare, review, and seal geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control for geotechnical deliverables
  • Serve as a technical advisor to clients, project managers, and design teams
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal preparation and client meetings
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, civil, and construction services

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (Master's preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (required)
  • 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical principles, design methods, and industry standards
  • Experience managing multiple projects and budgets simultaneously
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality technical reports and recommendations
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and client-facing skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Experience working on transportation, commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with regional soil conditions and local/state regulatory requirements
  • Experience supporting or leading business development initiatives
