Job Description:
The Geotechnical Department Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and delivery of geotechnical projects across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. This leadership role is responsible for departmental operations, strategic planning, quality control, financial oversight, and staff development. The manager will collaborate with clients, internal teams, and external partners to ensure timely and high-quality project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning Budgeting:
    Develop long-term goals and department business plans; manage annual capital and departmental budgets; support overall organizational strategy.

  • Business Development Client Engagement:
    Collaborate with business development teams on proposals; network to enhance visibility; define project tasks, schedules, and resource requirements.

  • Department Oversight Team Management:
    Monitor team productivity and chargeability; lead day-to-day operations; maintain a positive work environment; mentor and develop staff.

  • Project Delivery Quality Assurance:
    Lead the delivery of geotechnical and construction materials testing projects; ensure compliance with QA/QC standards; coordinate with architects, engineers, and consultants.

  • Policy Compliance:
    Establish and enforce department-specific policies and procedures; ensure adherence to internal standards and regulatory compliance.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    Coordinate with HR and IT on staffing and technology needs; work with other department heads on scheduling and resource allocation.

  • Financial Management:
    Oversee project budgets, invoices, software/equipment expenses; review client billing, collections, and identify revenue opportunities.

  • Client Contract Management:
    Consult with clients on geotechnical site requirements; oversee contracts and change orders; maintain communication throughout project lifecycle.

  • Additional Duties:
    Lead special initiatives and support company-wide objectives as assigned.

Proficiencies:

  • Budgeting, financial oversight, and invoicing

  • Project and personnel management

  • Proposal writing and business development

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Regulatory compliance in Michigan geotechnical standards

  • Communication and stakeholder management

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in civil/geotechnical engineering

  • Active or eligible Michigan P.E. License

  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects and engineering teams

  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and software

  • Proven track record of successful project delivery and client satisfaction

Employment Type: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM (with required overtime)
