Job Title: ABE Instructor

Department: Financial Opportunity Center

FLSA Status: Full Time

Job Status: Exempt

Reports To: Director of Adult Literacy

Supervises: None

Position Description: The ABE Instructor provides instruction, evaluation, and follow-up to students in Wesley’s workforce development programming. The lessons are designed to improve the basic literacy and numeracy skills of adult learners, while at the same time exposing students to key industry issues that are relevant to their lives and their chosen career field. This intensive course will prepare students to advance their reading and math levels as measured by the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and fully articulate their personalized training and employment. The goal upon completion is for learners to enter vocational training in community colleges who partner with Wesley.

Essential Functions:

· Provide instruction using the identified curriculum.

· Maintain student attendance records.

· Monitor student progress.

· Prepare, submit and discuss progress reports as required by the agency.

· Possess computer skills and knowledge of tutorial programs.

· Prepare student educational plans.

· One on one and small group tutoring

· Administer and score Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)

· Follow-up with clients in-person and via technologies.

· Enter data in Excel and database system(s).

· Develop plans of action and provide appropriate support to help client meet short- and long-term education goals

· Conduct education related workshops to assist clients toward career goals

· Monitor case files for completeness, required documentation, and consistency

· Design and implement presentations to promote FOC services to stakeholders and potential partners

· Other duties as need and assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to write and speak clearly and informatively; Strong computer skills including typing and Microsoft Office; Customer service oriented and able to effectively manage difficult or emotional client situations; Ability to work cooperatively and supports the team’s effort to succeed; Ability to interpret and communicate contractual mandates and guidelines, as well as learn, with a strong attention to detail; Strong organizational and project management skills including planning and scheduling; While in this position, the employee is expected to seek to understand, communicate appropriately and effectively, build a positive, professional rapport with all clients and staff using active listening and conflict resolution skills.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required. Exceptional Adult Basic Education skills required to promote basic adult instruction. Excellent communication, organizational and classroom management skills are needed. The ABE Instructor should treat all adult learners equally and fairly without discrimination or judgment. The ABE Instructor should also demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and be dedicated to the betterment of the community through education.

Work/Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to work constructively and cooperatively in a team environment. Employee(s) in this position will work primarily in a classroom setting where they will interact with clients to help resolve issues; while also having to stand and walk to complete job duties. Must be able to lift and carry up to (25) pounds unassisted. Employee(s) in this position may be required to work weekends in support of program services and special events.
