System Administrator - Champaign, IL
- 3 month assignment with potential to extend

The System Administrator is responsible for ensuring the District’s technology infrastructure operates efficiently and securely. This role maintains, upgrades, and manages software, hardware, servers, and network systems while proactively diagnosing and resolving technical issues to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, configure, and ensure reliable operation of computer systems, network servers, and virtualization platforms.
- Manage essential IT operations including operating systems, security tools, applications, servers, email systems, desktops, laptops, and peripheral devices (printers, phones, surveillance cameras, radios, etc.).
- Administer Active Directory, including user account setup and access management.
- Monitor system performance and troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues.
- Maintain and support Windows and Linux servers.
- Manage virtualization environments (VMware/Hyper-V), including VLAN configuration and Enterprise Plus features.
- Perform routine system audits, including verification of backup systems and disaster recovery processes.
- Monitor data center health using management tools and respond to hardware alerts and failures.
- Replace or upgrade outdated or defective components as necessary.
- Identify security risks and implement mitigation strategies using current security best practices.
- Support and maintain endpoint protection systems (e.g., TRAPS).
- Manage and support firewall and filtering solutions (Palo Alto, Securly, email filtering appliances preferred).
- Assist with server deployment, testing, and maintenance.
- Develop and maintain internal documentation, including technical manuals, system documentation, and IT policies/procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and documentation to IT staff for infrastructure planning and upgrades.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to communicate project status and technical updates.
- Train Computer Technicians on new hardware and software implementations.
- Perform Computer Technician duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Network Administration, or related field (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in system administration, database administration, or network administration.
- Experience managing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems and hardware across multiple platforms.
- Working knowledge of multiple operating systems: Windows, ChromeOS, Android, macOS, iPadOS, and iOS.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking protocols.
- Working knowledge of UNIX system administration.
- Experience with Windows and Linux server environments.
- Experience with VMware and/or Hyper-V virtualization platforms.
- Experience supporting endpoint protection solutions (TRAPS preferred).
- Experience with Palo Alto firewalls, Securly filtering systems, and email filtering appliances preferred.
- Proficiency with common software applications, cloud storage, and productivity tools.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to travel efficiently between work locations as needed.
