Job Description

The Rehab Wildlife Keeper position provides care and coordination for sick, orphaned, and injured wildlife at the DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center. Working closely with veterinary staff, volunteers, and the public, this role supports wildlife rehabilitation efforts, promotes animal welfare, and contributes to the health of local wildlife populations and ecosystems.

What You'll Do

  • Provide daily care for captive wildlife, including proper housing, diet preparation, enrichment, and monitoring overall well-being.
  • Observe and assess animal behavior and health, documenting changes and reporting concerns to veterinary staff.
  • Support clinical operations by assisting veterinary staff with examinations, treatments, and rehabilitation activities.
  • Train, guide, and support staff and volunteers in wildlife care, handling, and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Coordinate and carry out wildlife release activities, including evaluation, banding, transport, and selection of appropriate release sites.
  • Inspect animal enclosures regularly and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to ensure safe, secure environments.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment needed for animal husbandry and rehabilitation operations.
  • Complete administrative and recordkeeping tasks, including maintaining accurate electronic medical records.
  • Provide educational information about native wildlife to visitors, volunteers, and community members.
  • Promote a safe, supportive work environment by following all safety procedures and supporting the district's safety and risk management programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You'll Need

  • 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • High School Diploma/GED, 1 - 3 years of related experience in wildlife animal care and rehabilitation, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing.
  • Must have and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification or obtain within 6 months (training provided).
  • Must have and maintain Illinois Mandated Reporter certification or obtain upon hire (training provided).
  • Experience with training other seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of animal characteristics, behavior, and care.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and restraining practices.
  • Familiarity with observing and controlling a variety of wildlife.
  • Knowledge of native wildlife species, behavior, and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Ability to use of a variety of equipment and tools for maintenance of items.
  • Effective in establishing and maintaining productive workplace relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain complete, accurate, and organized records.

Schedule & Pay

  • This position works an average of 20 hours per week during the off season between Nov-Mar, and 35 hours per week from Apr-Oct.
  • Starting Pay: $19.58 – 20.78 per hour.
  • District uniforms are provided.

Work Setting

  • Based out of the DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center located in Glen Ellyn, IL.
  • This position largely works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Frequent handling of animal wildlife is required.
