Job DescriptionDescriptionThe English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides community members services to learn English or improve their ability to speak, read, and write in English. Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the administration and management of all program operations. This position coordinates the existing ESOL program and initiates and supports efforts to expand and develop new educational services.
- Supervise the maintenance of academic records and reporting requirements for funding sources, while using a participatory, team-based, learner-centered approach.
- Develop, plan, oversee, and manage the daily operation of the ESOL program.
- Monitor and evaluate program and student performance, and implement changes necessary to meet or exceed targeted outcomes.
- Oversee the development of the educational curriculum.
- Interview and hire staff in coordination with the Vice President of Workforce Development & Technology Services and ABCD Human Resources office and complete performance evaluations.
- Supervise, support, and evaluate ESOL Instructors and Education and Career Advisors; schedule and facilitate regular staff meetings; create Individual Professional Development Plans jointly with staff; guide efforts of staff to implement professional development plans; and assist with classroom management.
- Conduct intakes and assessments, enter student data, maintain student records, and monitor student and program outcomes.
- Provide regular communication and collaboration with other Program Coordinators.
- Complete and submit ABCD monthly reports and reports to funders promptly.
- Attend ABCD ESOL Program Coordinator meetings and participate in ABCD Adult Educators’ efforts to develop and implement program-wide initiatives, evaluate program performance, and create joint staff and program activities.
- Ensure that program data is entered accurately and transmitted to DOE via the LACES system in a timely manner.
- Ensure the effective use of volunteers and tutors, including working with teaching staff to develop training and work assignments, and to ensure the integration of volunteers to support student learning.
- Establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders and key peers in Boston area educational and community-based organizations; facilitate referrals to education, training, social, and emergency services as necessary.
- Recruit and support students, business and community leaders, staff, service providers, and public representatives in the program community to serve on the local and central Adult Education Advisory Councils.
- Attend mandatory meetings, trainings, and conferences of the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Coordinate with ABCD departments and staff to ensure that the program meets current ADA requirements.
- Substitute for instructors when they are absent.
- Performs other related duties as assigned from time to time.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences or related field, and one to three years of previous teaching experience with adults and/or youth, preferably in ABE, ASE, or ESOL in a community-based setting required.
- Certification in BEST Plus 2.0 and TABE CLAS-E Reading and Writing preferred.
- Experience working in DESE-funded program a plus.
- Certification in administering and scoring the TABE Reading and Writing and BEST Plus 2.0 preferred
- Demonstrated ability in program planning and evaluation, curriculum development, program management, and supervision.
- Demonstrated knowledge of specialized literacy programs and best practices in educational programming.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
- Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
