CNC Machinist-Operator Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Machine Setup:
- Prepare CNC machines for production by loading materials, selecting the appropriate tools, and configuring settings based on job specifications.
- Read and interpret technical blueprints, CAD drawings, and engineering plans to determine the correct machine setup and operations.
- Input production instructions, such as dimensions, tolerances, and feed rates, into CNC machines.
- Machine Operation:
- Operate CNC machinery (such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, or routers) to perform various cutting, drilling, or shaping operations.
- Monitor machines during the production process to ensure smooth operations and make adjustments as necessary to optimize performance.
- Ensure all parts are produced to exact specifications, using measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify accuracy.
- Perform routine quality checks on parts to detect defects or deviations from specifications and adjust machine settings accordingly.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning of CNC machines, ensuring they are in proper working condition.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot machine malfunctions or issues, performing minor repairs or adjustments to ensure minimal downtime.
- Report any significant machine or product defects to supervisors or the maintenance team.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to OSHA and other regulatory standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area to prevent accidents and improve workflow.
- Collaboration and Reporting:
- Work closely with engineers, programmers, and quality control personnel to ensure the smooth flow of production.
- Provide feedback to supervisors and team members about production efficiency and potential areas for improvement.
- Document machine performance, maintenance activities, and production data as required by the company.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED is typically required. Additional certification or training in CNC machining or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience operating CNC machines is preferred. Knowledge of various CNC programming languages (such as G-code) is an advantage.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in operating CNC machines, including lathes, milling machines, and routers.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD files.
- Familiarity with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.).
- Basic understanding of CNC programming languages and machine control systems.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
- Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
Soft Skills:
- Problem-solving abilities to quickly troubleshoot and resolve machine issues.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure the precision of manufactured parts.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment:
- CNC machinists typically work in manufacturing facilities, machine shops, or production plants.
- The work environment may involve exposure to loud machinery, metal shavings, and various lubricants or coolants.
Career Advancement:
- With additional training or experience, CNC operators can move into roles such as CNC Programmer, CNC Supervisor, or Quality Control Inspector.
