A Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card is required for employment at Gila Community College.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to perform general physical activities that require use of arms and/or legs and whole-body movement such as lifting, balancing, walking, running, stooping, carrying objects and handling tools and materials.
  • Ability to assess the environment, identify potential security issues, and respond efficiently and effectively in a variety of situations that may include moderate to high levels of stress.
  • Functions/duties as listed in Procedure 5012.02 Employee Classification General Responsibilities.
  • Additional position specific essential functions are listed below.

Level of Supervision or Independent Judgement

  • Perform duties, often as the sole provider on site, with intermittent direct supervision following procedures, instructions, directions, and training given.
  • Some independent decision making.

Duties and Responsibilities

Security Guards are expected to perform any or all duties listed below in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. This is an unarmed security guard position.

  • The main role of a security guard will be to protect College premises by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing for signs of crime or disorder, and reporting any disturbances.
  • Duties will include patrolling designated areas, monitoring surveillance equipment, inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates of entrances and exits to secure buildings and property as needed.
  • Answer alarms and investigate disturbances discovered or reported.
  • Circulating among students, community members, visitors, and employees to preserve order and protect property.
  • Respond to requests for assistance as appropriate to maintain the safety and security of campus visitors.
  • Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency such as fire or the presence of unauthorized people.
  • Respond to medical emergencies by administering basic first aid and/or by obtaining assistance from emergency medical personnel.
  • Write reports of shift activities and irregularities such as equipment or property damage, theft, or other unusual occurrences.
  • Inspect surveillance cameras periodically to identify disruptions and unlawful activities.
  • Enforce property rules and regulations to maintain order.
  • Perform similar duties not specifically listed as directed.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic first aid or other emergency response training.
  • Physically capable and able to lift up to 20 pounds if necessary.
  • Familiarity with report writing.
  • Knowledge of legal guidelines for area security and public safety.
  • Flexibility to work rotating schedule during week and weekends.
  • Ability to pass a background screening process and/or obtain a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card, as necessary.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience within a security or peace officer environment.
  • Well-developed people skills and the ability to react calmly and effectively in stressful situations.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of safe work practices particularly when performing general physical activities.

Work EnvironmentDuties are performed in buildings or other enclosed, generally climate-controlled structures as well as parking lots, sidewalks, grounds, and other external environments. Use of technology, vehicles, and other security tools requires both fine and gross motor skills. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures and rain, snow, wind, and other weather is expected. Some work situations may induce moderate to severe mental and/or physical stress.
