POSITION DESCRIPTION

LawNY is currently hiring a temporary staff paralegal under our eviction prevention grant. This position will run through September 30, 2026, and can be located in any one of our offices across our service area. These offices, and the counties they serve are in Jamestown (Chautauqua), Olean (Cattauraugus), Bath (Steuben and Allegany), Geneva (Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, Yates, and Seneca), Rochester (Monroe), Ithaca (Tompkins and Tioga) and Elmira (Chemung and Schuyler).


The Temporary Staff housing paralegal will provide services in matters relating to eviction, which may include client intake,advocacy to obtain/maintain public benefits, litigation support, and outreach in courts, shelters and other locations.


Staff paralegals at LawNY provide comprehensive legal services to eligible clients and the ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of how civil legal issues affecting communities with low-income intersect with social and economic justice. Staff paralegals play a critical role in realizing LawNYs vision of a society where access to justice is not determined by ones social or economic status. Every Staff paralegal is expected to actively engage in learning and becoming increasingly skilled in practice that supports this vision.


RESPONSIBILITIES These are the most significant responsibilities and primary functions of the position.

The Staff Paralegal will provide support to clients and attorneys, in Housing related matters, to include some or all of the following, depending on the needs of your office:

  • Communicate with clients about their needs and our services.
  • Screen phone, in-person, and online applications for legal services and intake eligible clients.
  • Make referrals to other providers and agencies for assistance.
  • Create and maintain client files, both physically and electronically.
  • Obtain eligibility and compliance documentation.
  • Assist clients in applying for housing and for public benefits and other assistance related to housing stability.
  • Assist clients with additional civil legal problems that impact housing outcomes, including increasing resources available to pay rent and addressing problems that affect housing stability.
  • Advocate with community and governmental agencies regarding access to funds for and related to eviction prevention, and assist clients in collecting and providing information required to secure these funds.
  • Assist clients in preventing utility shut-offs and securing funds to pay utility arrears.
  • Assist clients in maintaining benefits, including recertification of income for subsidized housing.
  • Visit courts to review files and share information about our services with potential clients.
  • Visit facilities for unhoused individuals and families to share information about our services and assist clients in accessing housing, benefits and other services.
  • Support the litigation efforts of our staff attorneys including assisting attorneys with preparing cases for court.
  • Draft correspondence and documents.
  • Participate in eviction prevention outreach and legal education activities to our community partners and the public.


QUALIFICATIONS These are the basic requirements for the position.

  • Associates degree, and/or relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting individuals and communities facing economic and institutional barriers to legal access.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to courts, community agencies, and outreach events, some of which may be located outside the county in which the paralegals office is located.


COMPENSATION PACKAGE

The beginning salary for a Staff Paralegal with no experience is $33,670 and the salary for a Staff Paralegal with thirty years of experience is $64,620. Salary will be based on experience. LawNY is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
  • Experience with the use of trauma informed care practices
  • Excellent use of Google Drive/GSuite, Word, Excel, and database programs
  • Fluency in a language other than English that is spoken by our clients.
