Position Summary
Design, build and maintain machine tooling and fixtures in support of a three-plant sheet metal fabrication company. Lead and direct other tool and die makers.
Education/Experience: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with:
- Formal training in an apprenticeship program, vocational school, community or technical college; or,
- Completion of a four-year apprenticeship approved by the U.S. Department of Labor; or,
- Eight years’ equivalent job experience
Desired: Knowledge of CAD/CAM programs to design and manufacture dies, fixtures and tooling
Duties and Responsibilities
Technical:
- Provide direction and training of the operations of all machine tools in a safe and functional manner.
- Ability to use all machine tools to make quality components in a timely fashion
- Design and construct functional dies and fixtures from part print to final tooling design with CAD.
- Analyze print specifications, set up and operate machine tools to manufacture parts to specifications.
- Develop production dies, fixtures and tooling to meet the needs of production.
- Repair and maintain existing production dies, fixtures and tooling.
- Build, fit and assemble parts to make jigs, fixtures, gauges and production tools.
- Design, build, maintain and repair tooling to produce sheet metal parts.
- Verify dimensions, alignment and clearances for finished components using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, gauge blocks, calipers and dial indicators.
- Train apprentices on aspects of the work:
- Oversee daily duties of apprentice.
- Lead and oversee the operation of the Die Shop.
Planning and Organization:
- Plan and develop the schedule for tooling construction.
- Effectively manage and produce multiple projects.
- Produce bill of materials to order for a project.
- Ensure timely completion of tooling, fixtures and assemblies to meet project objectives.
Safety:
- Must abide by all OSHA, EPA, Department of Labor and company regulations and requirements
- Must maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Participate in safety training for tool and die shop employees in conjunction with local plant safety director.
Problem Solving:
- Ability to analyze and identify tooling problems, determine the root cause, and develop a solution.
Innovation:
- Always be on the alert for new developments in the metal stamping industry that have the potential to improve and cost reduce die design, fabrication and operation and extend tool operational life as well as tooling improvements that will reduce manufacturing costs for plant operations.

Travel Required: Typically none
Hours: Regular 40-hour workweek. Minimal overtime, as needed.
Working Conditions: Machine shop setting. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods and move about the facility and between facilities as required. Safety glasses, as well as other PPE required, depending on the area of the facility. Must be able to lift or move up to 75 lbs. on occasion.
