A Day in the Shop
You’ll arrive for second shift, review your traveler and blueprint package, and set up multi-axis CNC equipment (horizontal/vertical mills and turning centers) alongside manual lathes and grinders. You’ll program complex parts using Mazatrol and G/M code, select tooling and fixtures, dial in offsets, and verify critical features with micrometers, calipers, and gauges. Throughout the run, you’ll manage tool wear, inspect parts against tight tolerances, document results, and troubleshoot any issues that arise. You’ll collaborate with engineers and fellow machinists to improve cycle times and quality, perform routine maintenance, and wrap up by completing production records and 5S before handoff.
What You’ll Do
- Independently program, set up, and run complex parts using Mazatrol and G & M codes; manage tool conditions and develop standard work for setup, inspection, and deburring.
- Set up and operate a range of equipment: CNC horizontals/verticals, CNC turning centers, manual lathes, milling machines, and grinders—covering at least three distinct machine categories.
- Select/install tooling, fixtures, and materials; interpret blueprints, BOMs, and work instructions to produce parts to specification.
- Use precision metrology (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to verify tolerances; identify defects and adjust processes to protect quality.
- Troubleshoot machining issues; perform routine maintenance and minor repairs; escalate significant equipment needs to supervision.
- Maintain accurate production records: setups, run times, material usage, deviations, and quality documentation; complete work orders and logs.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and teammates; participate in team meetings and continuous improvement activities.
- Engage in training to strengthen machining and product knowledge; attend monthly EHS sessions; follow PPE and all safety protocols, reporting hazards promptly.
What You Bring
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 3+ years operating CNC machines in a manufacturing environment.
- 2+ years CNC programming experience.
- Hands-on experience with hand/pneumatic/power tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, presses).
- Fluency with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges).
- Ability to read BOMs, work instructions, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Strong problem solving with clear written and verbal communication; time management, strategic thinking, and adaptability.
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs individually and 70 lbs as a team; work within test pressures not exceeding 30,000 PSI.
Preferred
- 2+ years in manufacturing or other fast‑paced operations.
- General computer knowledge, including SSO, JD Edwards, Microsoft Outlook.
- Demonstrated ability to program highly complex parts using Mazatrol and G/M code.
Proficiencies
- Equipment troubleshooting; CNC tooling; CNC programming; CNC machine repair/installation; manual machining; blueprint reading.
- Troubleshooting CNC machines; strong communication; Microsoft Excel; basic computer skills.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment; High School/GED.
