Job Description
The Bankruptcy Research Clerk’s primary responsibility is to research new bankruptcy cases and identify delinquent taxes owed to the Firm’s clients. Once identified, the clerk prepares Proofs of Claim and Notices of Appearance, while ensuring accurate data entry into BankTool and coding accounts in Tax Tool. This role requires strong research skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Research Duties
- Research new bankruptcy cases filed under Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 for any taxes owed to clients.
- Review all PACER case filing reports from various offices for potential delinquent taxes.
- Examine Petitions, Schedules, Statements of Financial Affairs, and amendments to identify tax obligations.
- Review incoming mail and emails daily for additional bankruptcy cases requiring claims or amendments.
- Research foreclosure lists to determine any active bankruptcies.
Administrative Duties
- Prepare and file Proofs of Claim and Notices of Appearance in a timely manner.
- Input and update case information in BankTool and code accounts in Tax Tool.
- Prepare Proofs of Claim for court costs and fees.
- Communicate with firm staff and jurisdictions to obtain tax information.
- Draft and process amendments to claims as needed, updating BankTool accordingly.
- Collaborate with consumer case paralegals to prioritize urgent cases.
- Assist with recurring special projects, including updating estimated amounts to actuals.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 1+ year of experience in bankruptcy research, legal support, or a related field preferred.
- Familiarity with PACER and bankruptcy documents strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience with BankTool and Tax Tool a plus.
- Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to interpret legal documents.
- Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
