Position Summary:
Due to the recent release of the USCIS visa bulletin for green cards, many of our clients have now become newly eligible to file Adjustment of Status (AOS) applications or progress on employment-based immigrant petitions. This regulatory change has led to a significant surge in green card filings, and as such, Ellis Porter is looking to add several Contract Attorneys to meet our client needs during this busy filing window.
As aContract Attorney on our Green Card Services team, you will be part of a team of Attorneys and Case Managers helping clients navigate the US immigration system during this period of unprecedented demand. You will work on employment-based immigration matters including I-140 Immigrant Petitions, I-485 AOS applications, and/or Immigrant Visa Processing applications. This is a3-month contract position created to help manage the recent influx of cases, with the potential to convert to a full-time role depending on performance and business needs.
This position can be fully remote from any U.S. location, or based in either ourTroy, MI or Ann Arbor, MI office as an in-person or hybrid role. Please note - although this role can be remote, all work must be performed within the United States.
What youll do:
- Under the direction of the practice team Director, you'll work with employers and/or their international employees to develop and implement legal strategies for a variety of immigration matters.
- Conduct in-depth conversations with clients to explain visa application processes and coordinate with clients to gather detailed supporting information and evidence.
- Answer client questions about application process steps, timelines and costs.
- Prepare and file green card related applications with the appropriate government offices, in collaboration with fellow Attorneys and Case Managers (paralegals).
- Prepare responses to Requests for Evidence (RFE) issued by government agencies.
- Research legal issues related to employment-based green card applications and stay informed on the latest immigration law developments.
- Correspond with other Attorneys and Case Managers within the firm to assist clients with needs that transcend practice groups.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
What skills and experience youll bring:
- Possess a Juris Doctor degree & are a member of any US State Bar.
- 2+ years of experience working in the employment-based immigration field as an attorney, including experience preparing I-140 immigration petitions and I-485 AOS applications.
- Familiarity with the interplay between PERM Labor Certification concepts, nonimmigrant status concepts and I-140, AOS and Immigrant Visa concepts.
- Ability to prioritize and manage a busy caseload in an efficient manner and consistent with numerous inflexible legal deadlines.
- Ability to collaborate professionally and effectively with team members.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to break down complex legal concepts into language that is easy for clients to understand.
- Possess patience to conduct frequent, and sometimes somewhat repetitive, educational correspondence and/or calls with clients summarizing their application processes and answering their questions.
- High level of attention to detail, emotional intelligence, and empathy.
- Ability to deliver highly responsive and proactive client service.
