POSITION SUMMARY:
Transgender Law Centers Legal Services Project Administrative Assistant will work at the heart of a movement of transgender people and allies, collaborating to change laws, policies, and attitudes to ensure that we can all live as our authentic selves. The Legal Assistant will primarily support the organizations Legal Services Project (LSP); the Legal Information Helpdesk and the Prison Mail Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the Coordinator of TLCs Legal Information Helpdesk, which provides basic legal information and resources to 1,500+ TGNC people across the country each year.
- Help ensure the Helpdesk inquiries submitted each week receive a timely, informative, and accurate response by either responding directly or coordinating with relevant staff and/or volunteers
- Help ensure the people who contact the Helpdesk via the phone each week receive a call back to collect enough information to create a case, either by responding directly or coordinating with relevant staff and/or volunteers.
- Support the Coordinator of TLCs Prison Mail Program, which provides basic legal information and resources to about 1000 TGNC people in jails and prisons across the country each year.
- Assist the Prison Mail Program by scanning incoming letters from incarcerated individuals, and printing and mailing outgoing letters. This role will also support with Prison Mail special projects, such as data clean-up, and organizing and digitizing older letters.
- Assist the Legal Services Project team in maintaining and updating the internal legal information database tracking most relevant laws and policies for all 50 states across a wide variety of issue areas, including identity document updates; employment, housing, education, and public accommodation nondiscrimination protections; healthcare access; police misconduct; issues with prisons and jails; criminal defense; family law; immigration; and other issues.
- Maintain and update files, including internal attorney contact information database and Helpdesk case data.
- Support Legal Services Project team meetings.
- Schedule and support in-person, videoconference, and telephone meetings, both within TLC and with external partners
- Provide research and administrative help to the Legal Services Project team.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
While TLC prides itself of prioritizing life-work balance for its staff, this position may require occasional long hours/weekends when on deadline.
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS
- Familiarity with the transgender community and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC)
legal issues - Ability to work in the Oakland office 3-4 days per week
- Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook
- Ability to learn and use printer/scanner/postage equipment and software
- Ability to transport oneself, walk, and/or drive personal vehicle to drop off mail to USPS office
- Excellent speaking and writing abilities
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines
- Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary to meet deadlines
- Skill at working collegially and collaboratively both within the organization and with clients, co- counsel, and other colleagues
- A demonstrated awareness of and commitment to a broad range of social, racial, disability, and economic justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TLC represents
- Enthusiasm for the work of TLC and its potential
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in a law office or in an administrative role
- Experience with racial justice, immigrants rights, disability justice, and/or TGNC justice work
- Proficiency in one or more languages other than English
- Experience with Salesforce or similar customer relationship management (CRM) platform
