Job Overview
The Nursing Assistant (NA) plays a vital role in providing care to residents during their scheduled shifts in a long-term care setting. This position focuses on delivering resident-centered nursing care and assisting with daily living activities under the guidance of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is responsible for understanding and implementing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans.
As a member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention protocols and utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately. Responsibilities include:
- Assisting residents with essential health care needs, including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and obtaining vital signs.
- Providing psychosocial support and personal care tailored to each resident.
- Facilitating safe transfers, repositioning, and ambulation using proper techniques and equipment.
- Engaging residents in range of motion and passive exercises.
- Contributing to food preparation and ensuring a pleasant dining experience.
- Assisting with meals and snacks, as well as providing hydration and nutritional supplements as needed.
The NA also supports nursing staff with procedures when necessary, documents resident interactions and care outcomes, and communicates any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse. Additional duties include:
- Collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens and vital signs.
- Providing housekeeping and laundry services to maintain clean living environments.
- Assisting with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.
- Participating in departmental committees and task forces as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) is preferred but not mandatory.
- Minimum age requirement is 16 years.
- Prior experience as a clinical or nursing assistant in long-term care is advantageous.
- Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the State Board of Nursing or obtain state certification within four months of employment by enrolling in a training program.
- CNA training and certification will be provided by the facility.
- Completion of annual department-specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits is required, with a minimum of 12 hours annually.
- For applicable states, registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry is necessary.
- Depending on facility requirements, this role may be classified as a Sanford Category II Driver, necessitating a motor vehicle report and valid driver’s license.
