Position Description
Middleton Place National Historic Landmark-
Middleton Place is a historic rice plantation located along the Ashley River in Charleston. Once home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence as well as hundreds of enslaved people, today Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark featuring America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens, a historic home, and stableyards where we tell the stories of those who once lived and labored here. Their stories are a microcosm of American history.
Position Summary- As the Director of Facilities at Middleton Place Foundation you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of all facilities at Middleton Place National Landmark. You will lead a team of skilled staff to maintain the highest standards of maintenance, safety, and cleanliness, thereby enhancing the overall guest experience and preserving the integrity of the site. The Director of Facilities will play an important role in the implementation of the Comprehensive Site Plan.
Reports to: Vice President of Facilities FLSA Status: Exempt
Qualifications
- Experience working in or with a National Historic Landmark or similar historic property preferred
- Proven experience (5+ years) in maintenance management
- Strong Leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team
- Hands-on experience with electrical, repairs, woodworking, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and systems management. Emphasis on Electrical.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
- Experience in budgeting, scheduling, and project management
- Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations and environmental standards
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when needed
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Must be able to walk long distances across uneven terrain, lift 50+ pounds, climb ladders, and operate maintenance equipment
- Position involves both office and fieldwork
- Some on-call responsibilities may be required during emergencies or storms
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Lead, supervise, and develop a team of maintenance, custodial and contractors
- Develop and manage annual maintenance and facilities budgets, schedules and work plans
- Responsible for overseeing the Maintenance workorder system.
- Coordinate with other departments to support events and interpretive programming
- Ensure maintenance activities are compliant with preservation standards and support the integrity of historic buildings and features.
- Oversee preventative maintenance programs for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire/life safety systems across the property
- Maintain roads, pathways, lighting, drainage, fencing, and signage
- Monitor infrastructure conditions and proactively identify and address potential hazards or deterioration
- Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations, especially those related to historic landmarks and environmental protection
- Prepare and manage the Maintenance Department budget, including expenses for labor, supplies and contracted services
- Uphold cleanliness standards and aesthetic appeal across the facilities, enhancing the overall guest experience
