Summary Description:
Buckingham Browne &amp; Nichols School is seeking a Middle School Assistant Director for the 2026-2027 academic year, who will provide academic and community leadership that is aligned with BB&amp;N’s mission, values, and Framework for Academic Excellence (FAE). This position is responsible for advancing core principles related to instructional leadership and overseeing the daily operations of the Middle School. With these responsibilities, the Assistant Director works with the Middle School Director and Dean of Students to advance strategically aligned goals to foster a dynamic, identity-conscious, equitable, and developmentally appropriate environment for students and faculty. The Director of the School plans, directs, and supervises the instructional and co-curricular program, including lectures, films, concerts, and social events. They hire the School’s faculty and staff, work with instructors to develop and implement curriculum, administer the School budget, supervise student progress, provide advice and support to students, faculty colleagues, and staff, and represent the School at professional meetings. They oversee the MA and DML programs, the summer graduate program in Buenos Aires, and provide input for the graduate program at the Schools Abroad. 
Responsibilities 
The Director spends the summer in full-time residence on the Vermont campus, where they oversee the instructional and co-curricular program and teach one organized course, if time allows. During the academic year, the Director works part-time to plan the curriculum, hire faculty and summer staff, evaluate and publicize the program, recruit students, and oversee the admissions process in collaboration with the Assistant Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

<li>Works across the institution to expand initiatives to implement the strategic priority to Indigenize the Institution.</li>
<li>Develop and implement a plan for building cultural competence for staff and faculty to indigenize instruction and content.</li>
<li>Increase Iupiaq-focus in existing course offerings and programs and develop new proposals for additional curricular areas.</li>
<li>Work with Student Services to affirm critical issues are examined and addressed to ensure they are responsive to student needs and that systemic solutions to identified problems including barriers to services, are clearly defined.</li>
<li>Develop viable plans to improve the Colleges capacity to attract and retain Iupiaq faculty and staff and support their career advancement.</li>
<li>Work with Human Resources to develop competencies required for working with Iupiaq students for inclusion in pertinent College job descriptions.</li>
<li>Work with Human Resources to develop hiring strategies, orientation programs, and other efforts that assure that all faculty and staff are aware of the Colleges commitment to Indigenize the institution and are provided with the information, training, and support to succeed in that effort.</li>
<li>Develop a program for faculty and staff to increase their understanding and capacity for addressing challenges for Iupiaq students and share best practices with their colleagues.</li>
<li>Develop programs designed to improve student success and build community relationships by instilling a broad understanding of Iupiaq history, language, and culture in faculty and staff.</li>
<li>Contributes to the growing College repository of information related to Indigenization, as well as information collected for the restoration, regeneration, and renewal of Iupiaq knowledge.</li>
<li>Attends various external events or conferences, as required.</li>
<li>Provides administrative oversight of the department and supervision of staff in accordance with the organizational structure, i.e. reports, intern supervision, timesheets, purchases, and grants management, that support the day-to-day operations.</li>

• &nbsp;Participate in professional development opportunities, including trainings, workshops, and&nbsp; conferences; • &nbsp;Display professionalism, mutual respect, and integrity towards other BSECDC staff members,&nbsp; families, and visitors at all times; • &nbsp;Ensure complete, accurate, and timely completion of all required record-keeping, data collection&nbsp; and analysis, documentation, and paperwork, including child files and reports to the Director, the&nbsp; Administration for Children’s Services, the NYC Department of Education and other parties as&nbsp; requested; • &nbsp;In collaboration with the Management Team, use information from ongoing monitoring and the&nbsp; annual self-assessment to identify program needs and develop and implement plans for program&nbsp; improvement; • &nbsp;Follow all applicable BSECDC policies and procedures, including the Standards of Conduct to&nbsp; safeguard children from abuse, neglect, or exploitation while in the care of the Center. • &nbsp;Implement fully all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations as cited in the&nbsp; Head Start Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, IDEA, IFSP, FERPA, ACYFIM, Department of&nbsp; Education and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Health Licensing Code, Article 47 NAEYC. • &nbsp;Assist with federal, state and local reporting requirements; • &nbsp;Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: • &nbsp;Masters in Early Childhood Education with State Certification • &nbsp;A minimum of two-years of supervisory experience • &nbsp;A minimum of two-years of experience in the classroom as teacher of a group of&nbsp; preschoolers. • &nbsp;Certified Pre-K Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) Observer, preferred • &nbsp;Education affiliations a plus
COMPETENCIES • &nbsp;Excellent communication, verbal, reading and writing skills, and cultural competency • &nbsp;Ability to administer screenings, assessments • &nbsp;Ability to assess the classroom environment using formal and informal observations, including&nbsp; the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS) • &nbsp;Ability to assess teacher/child interactions using the CLASS • &nbsp;Ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff and colleagues • &nbsp;Ability to establish positive relationships with staff • &nbsp;Ability to display through interactions with families, staff and colleagues universal values of&nbsp; tolerance, mutual respect, and compassion Must maintain on files an updated medical report with complete immunizations. Medical report must ascertain that individual is physically fit to work with young children and participates fully in any physical activities required by the program curriculum and the position.
